JUNIOR BOYS (DJ Set) w/ Matthew Dear & Shy Child @ Hiro Ballroom (Maritime Hotel) - 3/13

With SXSW Festival taking place in Austin this week, the whole music industry is out of town along with many, many, underground bands. This leaves NYC with fairly limited options for live shows (compared to a normal week), but that doesn't mean there's nothing to see. Hamilton, Ontario's Junior Boys are riding the neo-dance electro-pop that so many lesser known bands are trying, but the JB's do it better than most. Their music is both danceable and dark; angular and appealing. It follows in the path of many 80's British synth-pop bands and has been critically acclaimed: their latest effort So This Is Goodbye, garnered a 9.0 by Pitchforkmedia.com. Also be sure to check out the up and coming openers Matthew Dear and Shy Child at the Hiro this weekend.

The Juan Maclean & Professor Murder @ Hiro Ballroom 1/18

The Juan Maclean AKA John Maclean: former Six Finger Satellite guitarist reinvents himself as an electronica all-star; the DFA's secret techno weapon. He's going without his backing band on this one, performing a DJ set Thursday night at the Maritime Hotel's Hiro Ballroom.

Up-and-coming fellow indie-electronicsters Professor Murder are playing as well. Their debut EP Professor Murder Rides the Subway came out this past year, and they're looking to show their live chops.

The show is a steep $20, but evidently one can get in for free via this.

Deerhoof, Excepter, Erase Errata @ Hiro Ballroom 11/3

San Francisco's Deerhoof are a talented and wildly entertaining live act. Vocalist/bassist Satomi Matsuzaki sings delightful sugar-pop melodies over the noisy, angular guitar work of John Dieterich and the spastic drumming of Deerhoof founder Greg Saunier. Their recorded songs translate extremely well to the live setting, which, coupled with a charming, off-kilter stage presence, makes for a great live show.

Fellow SF group Erase Errata offer simple, punk-inspired dance traxx.
RIYL: Le Tigre, Bikini Kill, The Slits, Sleater-Kinney

NYC's own Excepter kick out some of the most interesting electronic music of the 00's. This group seamlessly fuses experimental and house music, with results that can fall anywhere between psychedelic krautrock, abrasive noise squeals, and squiggly techno.
What should you expect from Excepter? Warbly synth tones, driving drum box beats, incoherent ramblings, the unexpected.
